How the Calculations are derived

This Cost of Ownership tool is used as a general guide to the running costs of your vehicle against an alternative new car. Its designed to give guidance on the key costs involved in running a vehicle.

Relating to private vehicles only, it covers most modern makes and models within the segments that Toyota competes. Not all segments are displayed and vehicles less than 2 years old. Once a vehicle registration and mileage is entered, we access a number of different industry and proprietry databases so as to display the different key costs for your vehicle and selected alternatives

Cost Items:

Depreciation: Almost always the key cost of ownership and a strong area for Toyota cars. Depreciation is the value “lost” by a vehicle over time compared to its original retail value. Assumes the vehicle is in a sale worthy condition in a Franchise dealer. For the benefit of our calculations we assume cars depreciate or “lose money” relative to a new vehicle at a percentage determined by using advertised values on Carzone.ie over a 3 year period and these prices are retail prices. When trading in a vehicle, the customer will get a different value (generally less than retail) so that the dealer can create a margin and so that the dealer can make any necessary repairs to the vehicle in preparation for sale.

Road Tax: The annual cost of motor tax based on either cc or Co2 depending on the vehicle.

NCT: The cost of a national vehicle test as per the date at which it falls due over the period plus a figure that allows for minor NCT failure repairs and a pre NCT test.

Fuel: The average fuel consumption based on the industry standard combined cycle for the vehicle in question (excluding extra options that affect performance) in l/100km multiplied by the km’s driven on an annual basis as entered by the user, multiplied by the cost of fuel as determined on a given date and time in question. For older vehicles there will be degradation on efficiency and this is factored in.

Servicing: Indicative service costs based on the km’s driven as entered by the user. Actual servicing costs may vary but we always emphasise that the best way to protect the value of your car is to have it serviced in line with the manufacturer’s recommendation. There is a value included for non-service items which will fail in older vehicles.

Tyres: The tyre size used is the standard size for the vehicle segment and does not include optional wheels and sizes. The calculation is again based on the mileage entered by the user.
